Initially when mobile phone burst into the scene the ringtone was not more than an electronic trill or a beep, still it was operative, it was using only one tone track and with it came the single-line melody and there was no choice on offer to the end user.

This was the opportunity for digital content providers who mastered their art in harmonium and created polyphonic ringtones and sold them to phone users and phone providers.

Although polyphonic ringtones were better than monotones, they still didn't sound like the music they were patterned from. Polyphonic ringtones and monophonic ringtones are similar in terms, like both can play tone-based copy of the song, however polyphonic ringtone is accomplished to play more complex music because it can copy instrument sounds and can play more than one tone at a time, which accurately serves the term polyphonic.

Polyphonic ringtones can play up to 40 notes at a time in a polyphonic-capable phone, which makes a more realistic sound of the song than monophonic tone. But, still polyphonic ringtones are not of the class to play a fully convincing clone of the original song, it is still incapable of playing lyrics.
