Ringtones are all about making a personal statement of who you are, especially in the teen and young adult demographics.

In today's day and age the battle between sexes is every where and the market of ringtones is no exception to this phenomena. While ringtones are very popular with both males and females, the later tend to shop more on them, according to a recent study by M: Metrics.

According to the measurement firm's report, 11.6 million American females downloaded a ringtone in August compared to 9.9 million American males. Preference given to genre of music is also different in both the sexes. Females purchased 66% of pop and 65% of the country ringtones that were sold. Males with their typical liking towards heavy metal and hard rock ringtones purchased 68% of them.

These results were not of much surprise to Anthony Wayne who publishes the Cool Ringtones Blog, says " Males were the pioneers to adopt ringtones technology, but now ringtone providers are targeting females who want to accessorize their phones the way they accessorize their outfits. For females it's a fashion statement and personalization and masculinity for males."

About 6.7 million American's downloaded a particular rap ringtone this month which makes rap ringtones the most popular in the ringtone market. After rap its rock or other alternative tones, pop ringtones, theme ringtones, classic rock ringtone, hard rock, heavy metal ringtones, voice ringtone, oldie ringtone and dance or electronic ringtones.
